SABORES DE CASA

Sabores de Casa is an observational documentary for which I served as the director of photography and editor. I created this project during my junior year at Ithaca College in collaboration with a classmate. The film explores Latin food businesses in Upstate New York, a historically white-dominant region, and highlights their role in fostering community. We approached this bilingual project in both English and Spanish, utilizing multi-camera setups with the Blackmagic Pocket, DJI lavaliers, and the Sony FX30 to authentically capture these spaces and stories. This excerpt offers a glimpse into the documentary’s themes and visual style.
As a Latina woman living in Ithaca, NY, I have always found Latin spaces to be a source of comfort, connection, and belonging. These spaces have introduced me to some of my closest friends and served as places where I could share the warmth of familiar food and culture. With Sabores de Casa, we wanted to not only draw from personal experiences but also highlight the resilience and vibrancy of the Latin community around us. This project was an opportunity to celebrate the businesses and individuals who create these welcoming environments while shedding light on their significance.
